Fillings

There are three different types of fillings: amalgam (silver fillings), composite resin (white fillings) and glass ionomer.

Amalgam

  • Strong if filling is of good depth.

  • Good seal for fillings that are deep under the gum line.

  • Available on NHS for molars and premolars.

Composite Resin

  • Tooth-coloured so improved appearance compared to amalgam.

  • Adhesive and therefore more conservative than amalgam fillings.

  • Available on the NHS for front teeth and privately for molars and premolars in adults.

  • Available on the NHS for adult molars and premolars in children under the age of 15 years.

Glass Ionomer

  • Tooth-coloured and adhesive but not as strong as composite.

  • Normally used to restore baby teeth or as a temporary dressing.

  • Can be used when amalgam or composite not suitable.
