Fillings
There are three different types of fillings: amalgam (silver fillings), composite resin (white fillings) and glass ionomer.
Amalgam
Strong if filling is of good depth.
Good seal for fillings that are deep under the gum line.
Available on NHS for molars and premolars.
Composite Resin
Tooth-coloured so improved appearance compared to amalgam.
Adhesive and therefore more conservative than amalgam fillings.
Available on the NHS for front teeth and privately for molars and premolars in adults.
Available on the NHS for adult molars and premolars in children under the age of 15 years.
Glass Ionomer
Tooth-coloured and adhesive but not as strong as composite.
Normally used to restore baby teeth or as a temporary dressing.
Can be used when amalgam or composite not suitable.
